Common Questions

  1. Who can apply?
    Hartford residents with children entering prekindergarten age 4 (PK4) through grade 10.
  2. How many school districts may I select?
    Applicants may choose up to five (5) school districts based on their residential zone and rank them in order of preference.
  3. How do priorities help in Open Choice placements?
    Open Choice priorities are generally only applied to the applicant’s first choice school district and may increase the likelihood of receiving a placement offer, but do not guarantee an offer.
  4. Do I have to pay prekindergarten (PK) tuition?
    No.
  5. Are before and/or after care available?
    No.
  6. I applied to both Magnet Schools and the Open Choice Program, will I receive an offer to both programs?
    No, you may only receive an offer to a magnet school or Open Choice school, but not both. You are not able to choose a preference for one program over the other in the application. If you receive a magnet offer, you will not receive an Open Choice offer, and if you receive an Open Choice offer, you will not receive a magnet offer.
  7. How do I find my Hartford Residential Zone? Locate your residential address on the Hartford Residential Zone Map, to find your residential zone number. 
  8. Which school districts participate?
    Residential Zone 1: Avon, Canton, East Granby, Granby, Simsbury, Suffield, West Hartford 
    Residential Zone 2: Bolton, Coventry, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Somers, South Windsor, Tolland, Windsor Locks 
    Residential Zone 3: Berlin, Farmington, Newington, Plainville, Southington 
    Residential Zone 4: Cromwell, Glastonbury, Portland, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield
